Well, today I had a conversation that I have put off for sometime.. the main reasons were that originally, Lynda and I did not plan on leaving San Diego until 2015.. Then it became 2014… Then she made the comment, wouldn’t it be cool if we went to her family reunion and just kept going… and I got excited.. which can be a bad bad thing…
Well, Lynda’s surgery to her intestine was a complete success, she is already back to eating a normal diet. (Love good Mexican food).. and with that my thoughts went into a very dark place.. This very well could have been bad. very bad. so with that, we decided that no words are truer than:
Life is short. You had better get busy living or get busy dying… and we both prefer the former…
and in that, I had that conversation with my boss, Cathy Young of Websense, Inc. I told her how we came to the decision to leave, and that I would put an offer on the table. I would take a 50% decrease in pay, keep my benefits, and work remotely. and each year I would come back to San Diego around Oct, meet with the external audit team from Ernst and Young, make sure it all goes well and leave in Nov, then possibly return in December.
That leaves us with the rest of the year to not only do my work, but to enjoy the road trip of a lifetime… I cannot reiterate this enough, Cathy Young has saved my bacon more than once.. She is without a doubt one of the most caring people I have ever met. I cannot begin to thank her enough.
This allows us the funds to travel, the health care as something to have in case things get weird. (so far so good). So tonight? I breathe a huge sigh of relief, and a smile is beginning to creep over my face… One of great anticipation….
Of the Road Trip FOR a Lifetime
